Manchester United remain firmly in the frame for the top four and are still in contention for the FA Cup and the Champions League, but a woeful performance at Wembley once again sees a question mark overing over Jose Mourinho's team.
15 points now separate them from the top of the table. Catching up with Man City was never a plausible option, and the Red Devils crashed out of the Premier League race conceding a goal after 11 seconds that set the tone for the rest of the fixture.
In the aftermath of one of United's worst displays this season, Jose Mourinho is faced with new questions surrounding his team in defence, midfield and attack, as well as individual performances.
United went with a front four of Romelu Lukaku, Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez, a move that 81,978 in attendance at Wembley will testify did not work for Mourinho. The Portuguese manager needs to figure out how to deploy his frontmen without upsetting the overall balance of the team.
They boasted plenty of quality in attacking areas, but there are still some tough decisions to be made. Alexis Sanchez or Jesse Lingard in the centre? Anthony Martial or Marcus Rashford coming in from the left wing? A puzzle remains to be solved, especially on the right flank.
Lukaku once again failed to find the back of the net, burdened by a mountain of responsibility that doesn't seem to affect his Tottenham counterpart Harry Kane. The Englishman brought team-mates into play and was a constant nuisance for centre-halves, while Lukaku's faltering presence sometimes brings to question his price tag.
Paul Pogba has been outstanding at times this season but, with United trailing after 11 seconds, the Frenchman roamed too often and Nemanja Matic was left overly exposed in midfield. The defence was once again below par. While Phil Jones, who is enjoying a stunning year, is not to blame for his own goal, Chris Smalling is normally sturdier in big games. The return of Eric Bailly will prove a timely boost while also raising more questions for Jose Mourinho.
