"My brothers were older, they had things in Argentina, they wanted to come back. My sister was younger and my parents made the decision that they had to return, so it was just me with my dad," Messi explained during an interview with 'La Cornisa' on 'America TV'.
That was the moment when Jorge Messi, his father, raised the possibility of them too returning home. "He asked me, what do we do? You all have the decision".
But the young forward was clear what his ambitions were: "I told him that I wanted to stay, I was convinced and I saw that the chances [here] were real".
It would be a decision that would change the course of his life and football forever. Almost two decades later and one cannot imagine Barcelona without Messi and vice versa.
It was a candid interview which offered a great insight into his career, one which also touched upon the sheer disappointment of World Cup failure with Argentina - something Messi hopes to change when they travel to Russia this summer.
