The first half was a lacklustre affair. Few chances, lots of mistakes and no sign of the beautiful football from Old Trafford despite Vincenzo Montella opting for midweek-hero Wissam Ben Yedder in the starting XI.
In the 41st minute, Sevilla would be punished through Unai Bustinza after the right-back got on the end of a Sergio Rico cross.
Things would then get worse for Montella and his players when they went 2-0 down, 25 minutes after the half-time break, when Javi Eraso found the back of the net with his strike.
But there was still room for their misery to be compounded as Pablo Sarabia received a second yellow card and Sevilla were forced to see through the last few minutes of the game with 10 men.
They did receive a small consolation however, when Miguel Layun pulled one back in injury time but the La Liga outfit still suffered their second successive league defeat and could drop down the table depending on results in Villarreal and Girona's respective matches.
For Leganes though, the victory was only their second in 11 matches in al competitions and moves them up to 12th.
