Neuer, one of the world's best goalkeepers and a consistent starter for Ancelotti's side, has been ruled out until January with a foot fracture.
The news came as a real blow for Bayern and forced the club to take actions.
Ancelotti recently confirmed: "Tom is back with us because we worked with him last year and he did well.
"He's our third choice goalkeeper, and the second choice is Christian Fruchtl. Tom is very professional, and he will return to the academy when Manu comes back."
36-year-old goalkeeper Starke hung up his boots at the end of last season after a trophy-filled career with the Bundesliga champions to become academy goalkeeping coordinator.
