He plays for Liverpool and is just 20 years old but he already knows what it's like to keep Neymar at bay. He did it at Wembley, with relative ease, during the clash against Brazil on just his second appearance for England and his first in the starting eleven.
So who is the player who kept the €222 million man at arm's length? Gomez has a Gambian father and an English mother and plays as a centre-back, although he is just as comfortable as a full-back on either side. He has found a spot in Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool side at right-back, playing there 12 times in all competitions so far this season.
With that on the table, Gareth Southgate showed his trust in the youngster and gave him his England debut against Germany during last week's friendly. He came on as a first-half substitute, and was then rewarded with his first England start against Brazil.
On his first international start, Gomez had the unenviable task of dealing with Neymar, but the Liverpool defender wasn't intimidated by the PSG star. He boasted stats of 87% passing accuracy, made eight interceptions and four tackles.
"I can’t speak highly enough of him [Gomez]. He played against one of the hottest players in the world [Neymar] at the moment and dealt with him really well," said England goalkeeper Joe Hart after the game.
His impressive performance was enough for him to be named man-of-the-match, as well as earning high praise from the England boss.
"Joe has been given the man-of-the-match award and rightly so," said Southgate in his post-match press conference. "We know his athleticism is a real asset, but there was also his decision-making and his calmness in the face of the high-quality movement and the high-quality through passes that he had to read."
After overcoming a serious injury to his cruciate ligament, Joe Gomez is ready to step-up and become a mainstay in the future defence of Liverpool and England.
He can play for many years to come, and he won't face a much sterner test then coming up against Neymar, the world's most expensive player. A test which he passed with flying colours.
