The 64-year-old former Middlesbrough and Liverpool midfielder believes that United felt pressured into hiring a big name manager after their rival Manchester City appointed ex-Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola.
Souness told 'Yahoo Sport' that "I didn't think Mourinho was right for Manchester United and I said that from day one... Because Guardiola was coming in at Manchester City, the people making decisions at Old Trafford felt compelled to go and get a big name manager and they ended up with Jose."
'Souey' cited the importance of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Michael Carrick last season as big concerns, given their advancing ages, but stressed that it won't be easy to challenge for the league title this season.
