United paid Everton a fee which could potentially rise to a staggering £90m for Lukaku, who is expected to start against his former club on Sunday.
The Belgian international had been heavily linked with a move to rejoin Chelsea, but Mourinho swooped in late and completed the transfer.
Antonio Conte ended up signing Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid, which by all means is no bad addition, but the Blues boss first choice target to replace Diego Costa was reportedly Lukaku.
Asked about landing Lukaku, Mourinho said: ' I don't think it was my influence, no. I think we paid the money that Everton asked for and we paid the player the wages that his agent asked for and we paid the agents the commission that they asked for.
'I think that was the way. I don't see another reason. We paid what Everton asked for. The seller club is the club that decides the amount the buying club pays or doesn't pay. With Romelu my club decided to pay and they got him.'
The assertion will certainly get under Conte's skin, but can he complain having secured the services of Morata? Who do you think is the better striker?
